Drexel University is Philadelphia's technology-based, co-operative education university. Founded in 1891 by financier Anthony J. Drexel, the University is nationally recognized for its excellence in preparing students for graduate studies and careers. A leader in curriculum innovation, Drexel, in 1983, became the first university to require that all students have personal access to a microcomputer. The pioneering Engineering Curriculum has been designated a national model by the National Science Foundation. The University is organized into six colleges and three schools. The colleges are: Arts and Sciences; Business and Administration; Engineering; Information Science and Technology; Nesbitt College of Design Arts; and Evening and Professional Studies. The schools are: Education; Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems; and Environmental Science, Engineering and Policy. Drexel offers 53 bachelor's, 41 master's and 17 doctoral programs. The University enrolls 11,000 students from 100 nations and has more than 65,000 alumni worldwide. MCP Hahnemann University, the former Allegheny University of the Health Sciences (AUHS), is now being operated by Drexel University under an agreement with Tenet Healthcare Corp., of Santa Barbara, Ca. The new university, comprised of four major academic units, the School of Medicine, the largest private medical school in the country; School of Nursing; School of Public Health; and School of Health Professions, is under the leadership of Drexel President Constantine Papadakis.
