-Facts You Should Know- -Student-to-faculty ratio at the University is 16 to 1. Class size varies. Two thirds of all undergraduate courses are taught in classes numbering 25 students or fewer. -A freshman Orientation Program provides academic counseling and introduces new students to the campus before classes start. -Academic programs are accredited by major accrediting agencies. -Advanced Placement is encouraged. Over 40% of the freshman entering in 1998 presented advanced placement credit. -Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi are among the many national honor societies with chapters on campus. -Undergraduates in most programs have access to microcomputers, central academic computing systems, and external communication networks. -The internationally recognized Graduate School of Oceanography, situated on the Bay Campus, influences and enriches many undergraduate programs. -Our General Education requirements emphasize breadth of knowledge to make your later, more specialized studies meaningful, and to add understanding, interest, and enjoyment to your everyday life. -The staff and advisors at University College, in which all freshmen enroll, will help students choose their majors and plan their programs of study. -The University of Rhode Island Athletic Department has both Men and Women's Division 1 varsity sports ( Football is Division 1-AA). We also have a number of club and intramural sports.
