International Student Programs

Highlights: International students are germane to the community college mission, as they provide academic and cultural richness not found elsewhere. The presence of international students alters domestic students' perceptions and understanding of a world society, serves as a human resource in both class discussions and student activities, and becomes the basis for friendships that often filter into future social, political and economic relationships. International students take courses that will enhance career, business or transfer education, many of which have low enrollments for the college in general.

In addition, international student non-resident tuition is particularly attractive during times of fiscal difficulty and at times becomes a form of export education. The importance attributed to individal international students by individual campuses correlates with numbers enrolled, which range from a few dozen to over a thousand. During the 1999-2000 academic year, CCIE started working with Open Doors in data collection collaboration.

There were a series of activities for the 2006-2007 academic year that were open to members who were current with their dues. Similar activities are being scheduled for the 2007-2008 academic year including:

* Eligibility for Institutional Grants (part of IFSA grant awarded to CCIE) for up to USD 8,500 to develop new Semester Study Abroad programs
* Eligibility for Student Scholarships (part of IFSA grant awarded to CCIE) for up to USD 1,500 to study abroad
* Eligibility for full scholarships for students to study for a semester in Korea (scholarships include flight, board, tuition and a monthly stipend)
* Eligibility for students to apply for CCIE/CEA USD 500 scholarships
* Eligibility for faculty and administrators to receive the USD 1500 Ping Fellowship granted for attending the CIEE International Seminar programs
* Eligibility for CCIE annual faculty/staff grants and student scholarship program
* Eligibility to participate in the INMP Internationalizing Curriculum Workshop & Simulation
* Invitation to the "Recruitment and Retention of International Students" workshop planned for November
* Participation in other specially invited thematic workshops that will be held throughout the year

University Attributes: In 1984, several California community colleges joined together and formed a non-profit, educational consortium, California Colleges for International Education (CCIE). CCIE is dedicated to the ideal of increasing international understanding through education.

The goals of the association are to:
- encourage development of an international perspective in community college classrooms;
- increase awareness of and encouragement in international development through technical education;
- promote opportunities for sharing of international/intercultural expertise;
- form liaisons between national organizations and consortia involved in international and intercultural education activities;
- provide an international and intercultural education resource body to the Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges.

International/intercultural education encourages the development of new perspectives by student, faculty, and staff in community college classrooms through an internationalized curriculum and multicultural/ international student body, and throughout the total college environment.
