Wayland Baptist University
United States
University Attributes:
Wayland is a private, church-related, coeducational university which seeks to serve both traditional and nontraditional undergraduate and graduate students. The institution offers a strong liberal arts education in a traditional setting while also providing at all campuses degree programs which serve the needs of an older, highly mobile, fully employed population seeking opportunities in higher education. The University seeks to attract students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, intellectual, ethnic, religious and geographical backgrounds and faculty who are dedicated to its mission and purpose, the profession of teaching, Christian values, scholarship, the academic and general welfare of students and service to the community. The University has both an academic and a service mission. Its academic mission is to prepare, in a Christian environment, broadly educated individuals who can move productively into a variety of professions or into further academic pursuits. Academic programs are designed to include a combination of educational breadth and specific career or discipline preparation. The University is a student-oriented institution which endeavors to relate the higher education experience to the human condition. The Wayland experience is guided by a dedicated, well-qualified, accessible faculty who value teaching and learning and exhibit both reverence and enthusiasm for that truth which has its ultimate source in God. The academic mission of the University is further enhanced through university support and encouragement of faculty development and scholarly activities. Faculty scholarship is broadly interpreted as continuous engagement in an expanding intellectual world through personal participation in the various forms of intellectual experience and activity. These include the integration of knowledge to give meaning to isolated facts, the interpretation and fitting of knowledge into larger intellectual patterns, the application of knowledge to consequential problems, and teaching which involves both the teacher and the student in the discovery of scholarly understanding. The service mission of the University extends to the residents of the Texas Panhandle/South Plains area and to the University's regional constituencies. The University serves these regions by providing appropriate academic and technical expertise, spiritual resources, cultural and athletic events, and facilities and resources to address the needs of its constituencies.
