The mission of Wheelock College is to improve the quality of life for children and their families. Wheelock carries out this mission by providing a sound liberal and professional education, contributing to the knowledge of professionals in the field, generating and sharing new knowledge, and influencing the development of social policy. The mission of the College is sustained by its academic programs, course offerings, and involvement in the life of the surrounding community, as well as research, curriculum development, and professional activities. Scholarship and professional training are integrated in the Wheelock curriculum. The undergraduate division introduces all students to the social sciences, humanities, fine arts, and the sciences and offers rigorous programs of study in related disciplines. To empower students, and to help them assume responsibility for their intellectual development, Wheelock places undergraduates in schools, hospitals, and community agencies during their first year. From the start of their academic careers at the College, students actively evaluate and shape their growth. Knowledge and competence in the professional domain provide personal satisfaction and inform career decisions. Students acquire critical-thinking skillsfundamental to lifelong learningin the Arts and Sciences majors and in Graduate School Programs. Wheelock encourages students to explore the coherence of all intellectual pursuits: the relatedness of history and innovation, social progress and traditional values, and classical and contemporary cultures.This academic program fosters confidence in professionals as they respond to the challenges in the education, health care, and human service fields.
